Waiting in Faith…

One of the definitions of waiting is the action of staying where one is or delaying action until a particular time or event. Another definition of waiting has a connotation of waiting at a table (profession)-serving food or drink, attending to someone, or serving someone. Both these definitions give us a shared understanding of what waiting means. Still, Merriam-Webster Dictionary brings in another important aspect that will help us to explore what waiting in faith is. It simply defines waiting as staying in place in expectation, and this talks of the how and the what.

It has been a couple of years since we have been enduring Covid-19. I don't know what you are waiting for. Is it a job opening, a financial breakthrough, a job, a health condition, a court case to be resolved, the salvation of a loved one, or any other thing you have been pursuing? The question that still lingers in many people's minds is "For how long?" and answers may not be coming forth, which leads to frustration if we don't choose the way of faith.

The Bible is full of examples of men and women who went through worrying situations, and some of them had to stay there for many years before God finally came through for them. From Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the 12 tribes of Israel had to wait for 430 years to get freedom! David is an excellent example of those who waited upon God in faith. Not only had he have to wait for many years as an anointed king without a throne, but he also had to endure hardships and danger as he looked after his father's sheep and later experienced harassment and persecution from the reigning king! He got so troubled and became a fugitive in the kingdom he was to rule, and he reached a point when he had to flee from it in order to preserve his dear life! Seeing how faith worked in David despite so many years of misfortune is incredible. He later confessed (after he had overcome the challenges) how he could have easily fainted and given up, but something kept him going- He believed that he would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. He didn't see death, but he saw God's salvation, and he held unto that amid his troubles. He said in another Psalm, "I will not die, but I will live to declare the works of the Lord in the land of the living."

We can learn from this man whom God called "The man after my own heart ." He was so honest with his emotions and feelings, and he didn't shy away from letting them out, but he released them to God and kept his trust in God's faithfulness and unfailing love! He kept his eyes on the promises of God, and he knew for sure that he who promised was faithful to fulfill his promises. We, too, can keep our faith in God with the assurance that he will see us through. We might be navigating through stormy waters, but we can choose to have our eyes on God because he is taking us to the other side! We stay in faith by staying in God's word because the word of God is the source of faith (Rom.10:17).

Let's remain encouraged by these words of the prophet Isaiah as we purpose to stay in and live by faith.

Study Verses: I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord. In the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! - Psalm 27:13-14

But those who wait on the Lord; Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. - Isaiah 40:31

Shalom! Peace be with you all!
